how
many articles about how lesbian identity is inherently regressive and
outdated and how being exclusively attracted to women is harmful and
exclusionary and we should identify as anything but lesbians
instead will i have to see before you all realize that homophobia
doesn’t cease to be homophobia just because you dress it up in a
narrative of false concern
lesbian identity isn’t entirely
unsalvageable just because its incredibly long, complex and diverse
history and community includes bad chapters and bad people. this call
for complete ideological purity is rarely made of any other identity;
most other groups aren’t asked to disappear themselves entirely so often
to atone for the sins of others.
calls for inclusivity and accountability are incredibly important, and need to be made of this community, but i will not let anyone tell me that my identity is inherently problematic and needs retiring.
it’s
also really convenient that this rhetoric literally always erases the
long and wonderful history of lesbian trans women who have made so many important contributions to the lesbian
community
there is nothing wrong with women being exclusively
attracted to women. the idea that i couldn’t possibly be gay because
solely being attracted to women is “unnatural” and “wrong” isn’t a
radical new stance, i’ve heard it from homophobes all my life
there
is nothing wrong with those women proudly reclaiming the term lesbian
from the hateful context it is usually used in either. how it never occurs to
anyone that the demand for lesbians to call themselves anything but
lesbians is steeped in homophobia is beyond me when i still cannot call
myself the equivalent of lesbian in my native tongue because i have only
ever heard it said hatefully, as an insult, and hearing it makes me
flinch
stop trying to police lesbian identity. straight people do that enough already, they don’t need your help
hii gabi!! i was watching a video and i noticed right before harry started singing louis signed a heart and pointed up? is that a thing that they do? thank you!! :)
